An Antique Bronze Seated Buddha - Qing

The Buddha seated in earth-touching (bhumisparsha) mudra, with his left hand held in vitarka mudra.

Sat on a double lotus base the moulded cast figure wears a robe opened to reveal his chest.

His hair set in tight whorl rows with a small stupa finial on top of his cranium protuberance (ushnisha).

The back heavily damaged with dents, worn areas & cracks

(possibly occurring at time of manufacture)

Measures; 7 1/2" ( 19 cm )

Bhumisparsha means 'touching the earth'.

It is more commonly known as the 'earth witness' mudra.

This mudra, formed with one or more fingers of the right hand extended to touch the ground, symbolizes the Buddha's enlightenment under the bodhi tree, when he summoned the earth goddess to bear witness to his attainment of enlightenment.
