A Bronze Figure of Krishna Dancing on the Serpent Kaliya

(Kalyahimarddka Krishna)

India - 19th Century

The heavily bejewelled young deity shown holding Kaliya's scaly tail as he dances with his left foot on the serpent's head.

He holds his right hand in abhaya mudra (gesture of protection or fearlessness) with his right leg raised as he rhythmically prepares to jump from one foot to the other.

The cast figure is set upon a raised double circular lotus base with incised petals.

4 1/8" ( 10.5 cm )


The history of Krishna and Kaliya is told in Chapter Sixteen of the Tenth Canto of the Bhagavata Purana.
