A very fine Sadeli mosaic inlaid box dating from the beginning of the 19th century.

The entire body and lid has been veneered in ivory and wood sections radiating from a central circle motif.

This motif and the many inlaid smaller roundels being formed from ivory, pewter, rosewood and ebony.

These were created by glueing lengths of the materials together to form rods. When the glue set, these rods were cut at differing angles to give a variety of geometric patterns. These were then laid together, sometimes in a continuous row and sometimes to form roundels. The ivory lengths used on this box had been stained green to add a contrast to the colour scheme.

The lift-off lid opens to reveal a plain wood interior.

A fabulous little box, quite rare and of great quality.
